Memoirs of a Great Person

I am a great person...indeed.

Ask Hong =]

A warm welcome from Ho Chi Minh! …After a shitty farewell from those stupid Capitalists (United Airlines)

So I’ve learned my lesson. Never fly international flights with United Airlines. Too bad I bought a round trip ticket with them.

I haven’t really slept for 24 hours. I could have skipped 2-3 nights of sleep if it weren’t for my friend Kate in Chicago. Everything went well… I left my home at midnight on May  16th to go down to Philly and then a bus took me to NYC where my friend Andrew kindly drove me to La Guardia airport. We sat around and chat a few hours before my 11am flight to Chicago. Everything was good, except the food. Don’t get Five Guys for breakfast. Andrew got diarrhea.

Then I got to Chicago and boarded the plane. I sat in the plane for 3 hours, no I’m not exaggerating. The pilot kept repeating every 1 hour: “Just 5 more minutes folks and then we’ll take off.” What a bunch of lies and propaganda! (No pun intended) We sat there for 3 hours then they finally announced the evacuation of everyone because they didn’t have fuel. Don’t you check fuel status before any flight?

They lied again once we were off and said that the new departing time was 8:00pm. A hour later they announced it would be delayed until 11:00am next morning! Ok, they provided us with hotel and food accommodations so that’s cool. Just be more honest next time, that’s how you get customer loyalty.

It’s cool, I stayed with my friend in Chicago and she was very hospitable! :D Slept like as if I was in a deep coma and arrived and boarded my flight the next day. This time no problems so far….

Then what the fuck? Just as we were 1 hour away from hitting Hong Kong, they turn around and land in Taipei airport! Apparently the weather in Hong Kong wasn’t safe enough to land… Ok…

Problem was I made an appointment with my friend David from Hong Kong to meet him in Hong Kong for dinner since I had a 7 hour layover. I landed in Hong Kong 3 hours before my final flight so I basically stood him up… I didn’t have a phone to inform him of the delay :( And it was his birthday too… I’ll make it up to you David Ho!

The final surprise (by now, not really)! My flight to Ho Chi Minh city got delayed by another hour. That’s fine. By then I was so used to delays that 1 hour delay felt kinda like God’s gift for me after enduring this shitty journey. Did I mention they put us at the wrong gate too? I was wondering why everyone around me was Indian…

Anyways, I’m here in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam finally!

Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam

Can I say that I totally feel that I’m in a socialist country already? I could feel all the patriotism around me from the uniforms at the airport, the dull, unoriginal interior design, the architecture. Six years ago at customs, my dad had to bribe the official at the customs gate $20 to let us in the nation. Now, smiling dude in the country’s military uniform greets me and lets me pass within a few seconds of seeing my passport and visa.

Oh gosh… the humidity. I don’t mind. I can get used to it. But it really hits you in the face and shocks you when you leave the airport.

The city has changed… Capitalism has definitely captured the heart of the city. However, I can easily see the poverty, in which the government tries to hide by pushing them on the out skirts of the city. Yup, I’m here in the slums of Saigon because that’s where my uncle and aunt lives. Imagine squeezing 10 family members into one small building. I guess I’m the 11th member now! :D

Also, there’s a cat. I’m allergic to these ugly creatures. Maybe I’ll suggest it as a dinner option tomorrow night…hehehe. (I’m really joking, don’t take it seriously white people).

It’s 4am… I should sleep. Tomorrow I actually get to explore the city!!!!

I really liked the colorful 3-panel square comic I did, so I tried to do another to the same effect. xD It’s not quite as funny though (at least it’s still cute). ^^; Enjoy it anyhow~
